Department: Anesthesiology
Syphilis is believed to have infected 12 million people in 1999, with greater than 90% of cases in the developing world (Stamm, 2010). It affects between 700,000 and 1.6 million pregnancies a year, resulting in spontaneous abortions, stillbirths, and congenital syphilis. In sub-Saharan Africa, syphilis contributes to approximately 20% of perinatal deaths (Woods, 2009). Rates are proportionally higher among intravenous drug users,
Prevalence of sexually transmitted infections (stis) among attendees of lead city university medical centre in Ibadan, Southwestern, Nigeria
Department: Anesthesiology
Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are a group of infectious or communicable diseases in which the primary mode of transmission is through sexual contact [1] and are among the major causes of illnesses in the world especially in the developing countries [2-3]. The diseases caused by STDs are classified according to the type of organism causing the infection, which could be bacterial, fungal, viral or of parasitic origin [4].
Prevalence and Antibiotic Susceptibility Pattern of Bacterial Agents Involved In Lower Respiratory Tract Infections in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Nigeria
Department: Anesthesiology
Lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs) are among the most common infectious diseases affecting humans worldwide (Carroll, 2002). They are important causes of morbidity and mortality for all age groups, and each year approximately 7 million people die as a direct consequence of acute and chronic respiratory infections (Ozyilmaz et al, 2005).
Occurrence of Gardnerella vaginalis in Women in Jos, Nigeria
Department: Anesthesiology
Bacteria vaginosis is a clinical condition characterized by a change in vaginal ecology and accompanied by vaginal discharge itching and unpleasant odour, the mixed morphotypes of Lactobacillus spp is replaced by a mixed microbial flora composed of mainly anaerobes and Gardrenella vaginalis (Alli et al., 2011). Infection with this bacterium is characterized by vaginal discharge with an unpleasant odor
Multi-Drug Resistant (MDR) Urinopathogens among Patients Attending a Tertiary Hospital in Lagos, Nigeria
Department: Anesthesiology
The urinary system is a sterile unit, which consists of the kidneys, ureter, bladder and the urethra. The key elements in the systems are the kidneys which are pair of purplish brown organ located below the ribs towards the middle of the back (Gilernwater et al, 2002). Urine is stored in the bladder and emptied through the urethra (Gillenwater et al, 2002). About 90% of all episodes of bacterial urethrocystitis have been found

This study reported the incidence of potentially pathogenic Vibrio spp. in fresh seafood from Itu creek. Studies were carried out to isolate, identify and characterized different Vibrio species in fish, crayfish and periwinkle obtained from the Itu creeks. Different parts analyzed using standard microbiological techniques were the gills, intestine and the body surfaces. The Vibrio species isolated and identified were Vibrio cholerae
Detection Of Hepatitis C Virus (Hcv) Antibody Among Children In Ibadan, Southwestern Nigeria
Department: Anesthesiology
The term Hepatitis C virus (HCV) was first adopted in 1989 following the identification of an RNA viral genome in a random-prime cDNA library derived from a human plasma sample containing the putative non-A, non-B hepatitis agent (Choo et al., 1989). Epidemiological studies established that there were two routes of transmission of non-A, non-B hepatitis.
Bacteriological Review of Multi-Drug Resistance (MDR) Pathogens involved in Respiratory Tract Infections (RTIs) in Abeokuta, Nigeria
Department: Anesthesiology
Respiratory tract infections are one of the commonest forms of human disease, world wide with global mortality rates estimated at about 7 million (Ozyilmaz et al., 2005).The human respiratory tract, particularly the upper respiratory tract is normally open to collonisation by diverse organisms particularly anaerobes with a ratio of upto 1: 100 aerobes to anaerobes (Murray, 1998), commonly encountered organisms include Peptostretococcus. Actinomyces, and Fusobacterium spp.
Bacteriological Assessment Of Some Selected Antacid Suspension Products In Nigeria
Department: Anesthesiology
Antacid is any substance, generally a basic salt which contract stomach acidity in other words, antacids are acid neutralizer (Malik et al., 1991). Suspension is heterogeneous fluid containing solid particles that sufficiently large for sedimentation. Usually, they must be larger than one micrometer. Suspension is a mixture of two chemicals with the character that does not rapidly settle out (Denyer and Baird, 2007).
