Quality Higher Education is sine qua non to Democratic Developmentalism-Structural Transformation of any Economy– Professor Oladapo Afolabi, OON, CFR
A former Head of Service of the Federation of Nigeria, Professor Oladapo Afolabi, OON, CFR says quality higher education is a catalyst for democratic developmentalism and structural transformation of any economy, enhancement of human capabilities and building and nurturing a democratic culture.
Professor Afolabi stated this during his keynote address at the 3rd Retreat for Provost, Deans, Directors and Heads Departments at Igbinedion university Okada.
According to him, “ The attainment of the World Class Status requires concerted effort on the part of all stakeholders in the business of education; and deliberate policy of ensuring that all the essential ingredients that will pre-dispose Universities to the attainment are nourished and adhered to promotion must be without sentiments and subjectivity, with appropriate governance, including structures for self-monitoring of focus, internal efficiency and quality assurance, and consciously dedicated funding.”
The former Head of Service of the Federation stressed that, appropriate structures need to be designed to ensure that universities and research institutes are formally linked with industry, especially in applied research and appropriation of research outputs and innovation. Speaking in his opening address, the Deputy Chancellor of Igbinedion University Okada, Chief Dr. Lucky Nosakhare Igbinedion who represented the Hon. Chancellor pledged his support to the effective management of the University which he described as a vision and a mission here to stay.
For his part, the Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Lawrence Ikechukwu Ezemonye said management decided to expand the retreat to include more cadres of staff due to immense benefits to be derived from it.
The retreat themed: Embracing Change and Transformation in Higher Education: Cracking The Code Of SITER” according to Prof. sheikh Ahmed Abdullah, the Pro-Chancellor of the University, is coming at a time when the nation needs brainstorming to globally reposition herself as well as chart a course for survival in a post COVID-19 environment.
Prof. Abdullah also used the medium to call on the participants to be transformative in outlook as the university needs all hands on deck to move the institution forward.
