The Immediate Past Governor of Gombe State, His Excellency, Dr. Hassan Ibrahim Dankwambo has urged the Nigerian government to design deliberate policies to combat the attrition rate of students fleeing the country for tertiary education abroad, by putting in place a reward mechanism for those that choose to return after graduation, improve the quality and standard of education in the country to world class status and erect some international bureaucratic barriers that could discourage foreign studies and enhance effective utilization of human mental resources within the knowledge economy.
Dr. Dankwambo made this assertion in a lecture he delivered in honor of the Esama of Benin and Chancellor of Igbinedion University Okada, His Excellency, Sir, Chief Dr. Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion CFR as part of activities marking his 86th birthday.
The erudite scholar and former Governor of Gombe State who is an alumnus of Igbinedion University Okada expressed concerns that “Though the issue also obtains in developed countries, it is more pronounced in developing countries.” He reiterated that “Nigerian students in different parts of the world including Sub Sahara African countries take the advantage of studying abroad and never dream of returning home, at least not immediately. This mindset adversely affects the manpower potentials of Nigeria. The increasing out flow establishes a parasitic relationship where one gains and the other loses”. “This phenomenon” according to him “is not healthy for the survival of the economy of donor countries”.
Dr. Dankwambo further posited that “An empirical validation of actual number of Nigerians lost through this phenomenon and an understanding of the real push-pull factors should be carried out and investigated” in order for the country to appraise the enormity of the trend.
In his opening address, the Celebrant, His Excellency Sir, Chief, Dr., Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion CFR. ably represented by the Scion of the House of Igbinedion, His Excellency, Chief Lucky Nosakhare Igbinedion, former Governor of Edo State and Deputy Chancellor, extolled the virtues of the Guest lecturer as a worthy and distinguished Ambassador of the University having bagged a PhD in Accounting from the Premier Private University, Igbinedion University Okada even while in office as Executive Governor.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Lawrence Ikechukwu Ezemonye PhD. FAS in his own address thanked the Guest Lecturer who is also a Visiting Professor in the Department of Accounting of the University for his Contribution to knowledge development as exemplified by his endowment of a new building to the School of Post Graduate Studies and Research of the University.
