With the establishment of the Buratai Centre for Contemporary Security Affairs, Igbinedion University Okada is set to begin training of Security Practitioners including the Military, Paramilitary, Private Security Companies and the general public in contemporary Security matters.
The Centre which was inaugurated on Monday 15th April 2019 by the Chief of Army Staff Lt. General Tukur Yusuf Buratai will focus on training and conduct of research in areas such as terrorism and organized crimes; Technology and Security, Arms proliferation, Global Risk and Resilience; Migration and Security; intelligence and terrorism, Biological Terrorism; Security and law; Human Security; Cyber-vulnerability and Cyber Security; Environment and Security, among other areas.
In his lecture which is the Maiden lecture of the Centre, Lt. General Tukur Yusufu Buratai enumerated the challenges of the Nigerian Army in its counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency operations which includes;- expanse of operational large environment, effect on weather and terrain; cross border nature of the crisis; porous border; remote nature of communities; insufficient international support; threats posed by mines and improvised explosive devices; large numbers of IDPs and refugees among others.
In his opinion the support from International communities particularly in the area of equipment sourcing and supply is grossly inadequate.
He therefore called on the International community to give more support to the effort of the Nigerian Army in combating insurgency and terrorism in Nigeria.
The Chief of Army Staff also addressed the misconceptions by civil society organizations stating that the continuous unfounded allegations against troops have remained a big distraction in the performance of the Nigerian Army’s stability task in the North East. The Chief of Army Staff lamented that every concession made by the Nigerian Army has resulted in the call for more concessions by the civil society actors.
The Chief of Army Staff was later conferred with the distinguished appointment as Professor-at-Large in the Department of International Relations and Strategic Studies of the University by the Chairman Governing Council/Pro-Chancellor Prof. Sheik Ahmed Abdullah OON.
In his conferment address Prof. Abdullah (Pro-Chancellor) Commended the Chief of Army Staff for the quality of content, reference and presentation of the lecture paper which he described as fit and proper for academic publication.
He therefore assured the Chief of Army Staff and the Congregation that the document would be sent for review for publication and placed in the library as reference material for research and training.
