Igbinedion University Okada has awarded the Ooni of Ife Oba Adeyeye Eniitan Ogunwusi with Horary Doctorate Degree in Law. Also conferred with the prestigious Igbinedion University Honorary degrees were Mr. Nabegu Aminu Baba, Managing Director, Nabegu Investment Limited as well as Pastor Osarenren Ighiwi, Chairman Egba Community in Edo State both with Doctor in Business Administration.

The event which took place during the institution's 14th Convocation also witnessed 50 academic graduands who were awarded higher degrees ranging from Post-Graduate Diploma to Master’s degrees and Doctorate Degrees from the School of Postgraduate Studies and Research of Igbinedion University Okada.

The Chancellor of the institution Sir, Chief Dr. Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion who declared the ceremony open said those awarded Horary Doctorate Degree were truly worthy of the honour due to their antecedents and exploits in life as well as their dedication to their primary call of duties.

The Chancellor who thanked the students and staff of the institution poured encomiums on the Vice Chancellor of the school, Professor Eghosa Osaghae whom he described as the longest serving Vice-Chancellor ever in the history of University education in Nigeria. He further commended the staff and students for their hard work which he noticed has earned them several laurels both within and outside Nigeria.

Oba Adeyeye Eniitan Ogunwusi who responded on behalf of other awardees described the founder of the institution as a great man who has used his wisdom to impact humanity. He thanked the Governing Council, Senate and Management of the University for the Honour bestowed on him and assured them of his support for the progress of the University.

The Special Guest of Honour, Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo state in his address described Chief Igbinedion as an Enigma.He emphatically stated that "Whether you like him or not, the Esama is an Enigma". The Governor also decried the economic loss caused by Nigeria’s over dependence on foreign commodities and services particularly through foreign studies. He observed that "Nigeria’s economy is losing about 26 billion dollars annually to schooling abroad, our universities have fundamental roles to play in discouraging the act".
Governor Godwin Obaseki further assured that his government will create the enabling environment for education to thrive in Edo state. He said "Our programme are a reflection of local market demand, our government is investing on Technical Colleges same way it is done abroad. We need Universities to partner and help us create avenues to invest in this regard". The governor however admonished graduates of the institution to utilise the knowledge gained to create employment for others.

The Vice-Chancellor of the institution Professor Eghosa Osaghae in his own address informed that Igbinedion University Okada currently has one hundred percent accreditation of all its courses and that the school has attracted students from the 36 states of the federation and Abuja. He further asserted that his Management team will continue to work tirelessly to raise the standard already attained by the university particularly in the areas of research. He also informed of the various research units already established in the university. According to him "We shall sustain the newly created Centre for Conflict Resolution and Peace Building and Centre for Edo Studies where students from other institutions, researchers, policy makers, non-governmental organisations and government agencies will come to learn more about this field". Professor Osaghae also mentioned other research centres which includes the Centre for Diplomatic studies and; the Museum of Nigerian music of all genre of Nigerian musicians.

Earlier the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the University, Emeritus Professor Oluwole Akande laments the condition meted on graduating medical students who find it very difficult to get placement for their mandatory internship before they can proceed to serve in the National Youth Service Corp. He said "It is regrettable that in Nigeria the statistics shows that it is one physician to 3, 500 patients, yet Nigerian doctors beg for posting".

There were also goodwill messages from various institutions and Governmental bodies including Benson Idahosa University, Adeleke University, office of the Chief of Army Staff, Office of the Chief of Naval staff, Office of the Governor of Imo State, the AIG zone 5 and many others.
