MAMA AFRICA: Dr. Winnie Mandela Goes Home as Igbinedion University Mourns


The body of the foremost female freedom fighter against the South African apartheid regime, Dr. Winnie Mandela has been laid to rest. Winnie, as popularly called was the wife of the South African first black African President, Dr. Nelson Mandela.

Dr. Winnie Mandela fought relentlessly for the freedom of the blacks in South Africa, especially the release of her husband, Nelson Mandela who was imprisoned for 27 years for his fight against apartheid.


Dr. (Mrs.) Winnie Madikizela Mandela in November 2004 received the prestigious Honorary Doctorate degree of Igbinedion University, Doctor of Laws, Honoris Causa.

Apart from the head of state, past presidents of South Africa including some members of the opposition party attended the state burial given to Mama Africa.
