Department of Microbiology

 

The Department of Biological Sciences, Oba Enitan Adeyeye OgunwusiOjaja II, College of Natural and Applied Sciences, Igbinedion University Okada, was established in the year, 2000 sequel to the approval and establishment of the University in 1999. There are three degrees programmes in the Department, namely; Microbiology, Botany and Zoology. Microbiology is the only degree awarding programme with full accreditation at the moment, with students at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

 

At the undergraduate level, the full time programme in Microbiology runs uninterruptedly for four academic years while for five years for a part-time programme. The Postgraduate degree programmes in Microbiology are: Postgraduate diploma (PGD) that runs for one year; Masters in Science (MSc.) for 18 months and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) for at least three years. The areas of specializations include: Environmental and Public Health Microbiology, Medical Microbiology, Food and Industrial Microbiology, Brewing Science, Immunology and Immunochemistry, Microbial Physiology and Biochemistry, Toxicology, Microbial Genetics, Petroleum Microbiology, etc.

 

The Department provides proactive, responsive and smart teaching to students in: (i) Microbiology discipline and (ii) other departments such as: Anatomy, Biochemistry, Medical Laboratory Science, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, etc.She equips the students with both theoretical and practical knowledge to strengthen their skills and profession.The Microbiology laboratory is well equipped and is affiliated with the Central Laboratory beside the institution’s main library. The Department is blessed with competent, versatile and experienced staff with specialties in Microbiology and other related sciences.

 

The objectives of the Microbiology programmeare to produce confident, self-reliant and highly competitive graduates who can create employment opportunities and fill career opportunities in industries, hospitals, private businesses, academia and research. Today, many of our graduates are doing well all over the globe.
