  • IGBINEDION UNIVERSITY CIVIL ENGINEERING STUDENTS GAIN HANDS-ON INSIGHT FROM MAJOR BENIN CITY INFRASTRUCTURE SITES.

In a practical-oriented academic initiative, the Department of Civil Engineering at Igbinedion University, Okada, organized an educational excursion for its undergraduate students on February 5, 2026. The one-day field trip took participants to two prominent ongoing civil engineering projects in Benin City, providing a direct link between classroom theory and real-world application.

The excursion focused on the Ramat Park Flyover Project at Ikpoba Hill — the first flyover bridge of its kind in Edo State — and the Okpagha–Amufi Road Project. Both sites are flagship infrastructure developments under the administration of Governor Monday Okpebholo, aimed at addressing chronic traffic congestion, improving mobility, and enhancing socio-economic connectivity in the state capital.

At the Ramat Park Flyover, students observed the construction of a reinforced concrete flyover bridge, complete with associated approach ramps, advanced drainage systems, and pedestrian facilities. The project, which has seen significant progress in precasting and structural works, is designed to alleviate long-standing gridlock at one of Benin City's busiest intersections, where the Ramat Park area serves as a key gateway linking major routes such as the Benin-Auchi Expressway and others.

The group then proceeded to the Okpagha–Amufi Road Project, a rehabilitation and upgrade initiative featuring pavement construction, comprehensive drainage works, and shoulder development. This effort seeks to boost accessibility, reduce travel times, and stimulate economic activities in the surrounding communities within Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area.

Led by academic staff from the Department of Civil Engineering, the excursion enabled students to interact closely with site engineers, supervisors, and other practicing professionals. Students observed first hand construction methodologies, material selection and application, heavy equipment operations, on-site safety protocols, quality assurance processes, and overall project management strategies.
