Professor Spencer Chukwumaobim Nwangwu is a distinguished academic leader and Professor of Biochemistry at
Igbinedion University, Okada (IUO). He currently serves in several high-ranking capacities, including Dean of the School of Basic Medical Sciences and Director of the university’s Centre for Climate Change and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). His career at IUO spans nearly two decades, during which he has risen from the rank of Graduate Assistant to a full Professor and a key member of the university’s Senate.
An expert in Clinical Biochemistry and Ethnopharmacology, Professor Nwangwu’s research focuses on phytochemistry, pharmacology, and environmental toxicology. He is particularly noted for his studies on the impact of agricultural chemicals like glyphosate on rural communities. A Commonwealth Professional Fellow, he has expanded his academic influence through international collaborations, including a stint as a visiting researcher at the Lancaster Environment Centre in the United Kingdom. Beyond his scientific research, Professor Nwangwu is a prominent advocate for environmental sustainability and the “local content” approach to development. Through his leadership at the Centre for Climate Change, he promotes circular economy concepts and the integration of SDGs into higher education curricula. He is an active member of the Nigerian Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (NSBMB) and the West African Society of Toxicology (WASOT), contributing extensively to the global understanding of medicinal plant extracts and their protective properties against tissue damage.
