Maureen Uchechukwu OKWU

I am a Professor of Microbiology; specialty in Medical Microbiology, with strong research interests in antimicrobial resistance, infectious diseases, environmental and public health microbiology, as well as medicinal plants and drug delivery. Current work is on, Genomic Tracking of Antimicrobial Resistance Transmission in Nigeria: A One Health Study of Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Multidrug-resistant Escherichia coli.
An academic, researcher, administrator and mentor with extensive experience in teaching, research, leadership and community service in the field of Microbiology. Currently serves as the Head of the Department of Biological Sciences (Microbiology) and the Acting Dean of the College of Natural and Applied Sciences.
Obtained Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.), Master of Science (M.Sc.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees in Microbiology from prestigious institutions as the University of Ibadan and Igbinedion University. In further pursuit of academic excellence and international research exposure, completed Postdoctoral training at KU Leuven, Belgium.

A member of reputable professional bodies, such as the Nigerian Society for Microbiology, Biotechnology Society of Nigeria, West African Society of Toxicology, Academia Café Elites, Microbiology Society, UK and the American Society for Microbiology. As a seasoned lecturer and mentor, have taught and supervised students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including Master’s and Doctoral candidates. Have served as an External Examiner to Edo State University, Iyahmo and has contributed immensely to curriculum development, quality assurance and academic assessment processes.

Have authored and co-authored several scholarly articles published in reputable peer-reviewed national and international journals. Have also presented papers at conferences.
