In a significant advancement for higher education in Nigeria, Igbinedion University Okada has been recognized for pioneering the introduction of Entrepreneurial Studies within the Nigerian University System. This announcement was made by Professor Lawrence Ezemonye, the Vice Chancellor of the university, during the opening remarks at the 12th Students’ Product Exhibition of the Sir (Dr.) David Osunde Centre for Entrepreneurship and Skills Acquisition held on Wednesday.
Professor Ezemonye emphasized the critical need for universities to adapt to the rapidly evolving landscape of higher education, which increasingly prioritizes skill acquisition. He stated, “The role of the University in fostering an entrepreneurial culture among students for personal survival and national development cannot be overemphasized.” To this end, Igbinedion University has integrated Entrepreneurship into its undergraduate curricula, making it a core component for all students at the 200 level across various disciplines.
The Vice Chancellor further elaborated on the comprehensive approach the university has adopted, which includes Entrepreneurship pedagogy, mentorship programs, enterprise incubation, creative hubs, and the encouragement of start-ups while students are still on campus. He remarked, “The Exhibition is undoubtedly a testament to the university’s commitment to providing our students with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in the global economy. The products on display are a reflection of their creativity, ingenuity, and entrepreneurial spirit.”
The event also featured a keynote address from Dr. Kevin Longter Parlong, the Deputy Director of the Directorate of Skills Development and Entrepreneurship at the National Universities Commission in Abuja. In his lecture titled “Personal Initiative and the Entrepreneurial Journey,” Dr. Parlong commended Igbinedion University’s initiative in cultivating an entrepreneurial culture within the Nigerian education system. He characterized this approach as a paradigm shift, positively altering the trajectory of graduate training by fostering creativity and self-employment opportunities among the youth.
The exhibition showcased a variety of innovative products developed by students, illustrating the university’s dedication to nurturing the next generation of entrepreneurs. As Igbinedion University continues to lead the way in integrating Entrepreneurship into its educational framework, it sets a noteworthy precedent for other institutions in Nigeria to follow, ultimately aiming to equip students with the vital skills needed in today’s competitive global market.
