Igbinedion University, Okada, in partnership with the Industrial Training Fund (ITF), Benin Area Office, yesterday equipped hundreds of students with critical skills for the professional world at the 2025 Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) orientation.
Held at the packed University Main Auditorium on Wednesday, 3rd December, the event targeted students from the Colleges of Engineering, Pharmacy, Natural and Applied Sciences, and the Department of Geography who are set to begin mandatory 3-month and 6-month industrial attachments.
The SIWES Director, Engr. Dr. (Mrs.) Maryann O. Ezugwu, a distinguished fellow of multiple engineering institutions, set the tone in her welcome address. She highlighted the programme’s vital role in “bridging the gap between theoretical instruction and practical industrial exposure,” thanking both the University Management and the ITF for their unwavering support.
Officials from the ITF Benin Area Office took centre stage, delivering hands-on, practical sessions. They drilled students on the often-daunting SIWES documentation process, workplace ethics, and non-negotiable safety procedures. Critical guidance was also provided on navigating employer expectations, proper logbook maintenance, technical report writing, and official channels for resolving issues during training.
“The interactive session was the most helpful part,” said one 300-level Engineering student. “We got clear answers on everything from allowances to handling difficult workplace situations. It took away a lot of the anxiety.”
The event, described by attendees as “timely and highly beneficial,” concluded with formal appreciations to the ITF team, university officials, and SIWES coordinators for organizing a seamless programme that prepares students not just as trainees, but as emerging professionals.
About SIWES: The Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is a mandatory skills development programme designed to expose Nigerian tertiary institution students to the practical realities of their chosen fields within the industrial and commercial sectors.
