



Igbinedion University recently pulled off a rare and remarkable feat, sweeping top honours at the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Nigeria Council Education Trust Fund Scholarship Awards, a national recognition contested across six SPE sections and more than 40 university chapters nationwide.
Engr. Dr. Oby P. Obeta, Head of the Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering was named the sole winner in the Lecturer’s Category across all six SPE sections in Nigeria, covering more than 40 university chapters. The national recognition highlights her contributions to engineering education, mentorship, professional development and the advancement of petroleum engineering.
Although the award was originally scheduled for presentation at the 2026 Nigerian Annual International Conference and Exhibition (NAICE 2026), it was formally conferred on 17 August 2026 during a special ceremony hosted by the SPE Benin Section.
Similarly, Christian Samuel Oburu, a student of the University, won the Student Category of the same SPE Nigeria Council Education Trust Fund Scholarship Award. The concurrent success of a lecturer and student from one institution underscores Igbinedion University’s emphasis on academic excellence, effective mentorship and capacity building in the petroleum and energy sector.
The SPE Nigeria Council Education Trust Fund Scholarship Award recognises outstanding contributions to education and the development of future petroleum and energy professionals.
