Prof. Charles Emeka Ochem

Prof. Charles Emeka Ochem is a distinguished legal scholar, seasoned academic, and Professor of Law at the College of Law, Igbinedion University, Okada. He holds an impressive academic portfolio, including an LLB from Obafemi Awolowo University, a BL from the Nigerian Law School, an LLM from Obafemi Awolowo University, and a Ph.D. in Law from Igbinedion University.

Since joining Igbinedion University as Lecturer II, Prof. Ochem has risen through the ranks to become a Professor of Law in 2022. He has served the university in numerous leadership capacities, including Sub-Dean and Acting Dean of the Postgraduate School, and currently as Dean, Student Affairs. His contributions extend to several university committees, reflecting his dedication to academic excellence, discipline, and institutional development.

Prof. Ochem is a prolific researcher whose works cover constitutional law, electoral law, evidence, maritime law, cybercrime, human rights, and international law. His scholarship has significantly influenced legal reforms in Nigeria, especially in the areas of electronic evidence and plea bargaining, which he notably advocated before their incorporation into the Evidence Act 2011 and the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015.

He has supervised numerous postgraduate research works, published extensively in reputable journals, contributed chapters to influential books, and participated in major national and international conferences. His professional experience spans legal practice, editorial work, and consultancy, including notable roles at Gani Fawehinmi Chambers, the Nigerian Weekly Law Reports, and Shakespeare’s Solicitors, where he serves as Managing Partner.

A dedicated member of the Nigerian Bar Association, the Nigerian Association of Law Teachers, and Lions Club International—where he served as President of Ovia Doyen Lions Club—Prof. Ochem continues to contribute to national development through scholarship, legal advocacy, and community service.
