IUO SET TO ESTABLISH PATIENT SAFETY INSTITUTE IN PARTNERSHIP WITH PATIENTS SAFETY AFRICA.
Igbinedion University Okada is set to enter a Memorandum of Understanding with Patients Safety Africa, an International Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) in affiliate with the World Health organization (WHO) to establish a Patient Safety Institute in Okada, the first of its kind in Sub-Sahara Africa.
The aim of the Institute is to among other things train health professionals to proactively identify early warning signs for reducing maternal mortality and to develop templates for 24 hours effective health institutional combat readiness for emergencies.
This revelation was made during a working visit by the President of Patients Safety Africa, Dr Asekhame “Sonny” Isemede to the Vice-Chancellor, Igbinedion University, Okada, Professor Lawrence Ezemonye in his office at the University Main Campus, Okada.
Dr Asekhame expressed his utmost joy at the possibility of a partnership with an institution of merit such as Igbinedion University Okada to pioneer a training institute on Patient Safety in Nigeria. He observed that Igbinedion University by this collaboration is set to break record once again in Medicare training and capacity development. He said that he is convinced that the intended Patient Safety Institute of Igbinedion University, Okada in collaboration with Patient Safety Africa, an affiliate of the World Health Organization will lead the path of Medicare training revolution in Africa.
Dr Asekhame “Sonny” Isemede, an indigene of Edo state is a World Health Organization (WHO) champion for Patient safety, a consultant in the National Health Service, UK and Specialist Advisor to the Care Quality Commission (CQC), England. Dr Isemede, is trained in Anaesthesia/Critical care and Public Health/Health Services research which give him a unique insight into the full spectrum of health & healthcare, care for individual patients, hospital care, as well as community health protection and promotion.
Earlier in his presentation to the Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Asekhame described Patient safety as the absence of preventable harm in healthcare. He noted with great concern the extent of pains and agonies patients go through in seeking Medicare in Nigeria and the number of death and near death situation that occurs in healthcare delivery across Africa due to lack of adequate safety protocol and improper orientation in our hospitals. He observed that regrettably the patient is not considered important enough in our hospital services and as such are treated with disdain, neglect and improperly.
He also informed the Vice-Chancellor of the various activities already engaged by Patient Safety Africa within Nigeria to propagate the Patient safety campaign including presenting a Bill to the Honourable Speaker of the House of Representative on Patient Safety, engagement in professional development training, involvements in Millennium Development Goal/Strategic Development Goals projects, media chats on Television including the NTA, interfaceNigeria.com etc.
Responding, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Lawrence Ezemonye thanked Dr. Asekhame for his visit which he described as timely and purposeful. He informed that since the proposal for partnership for a Patient Safety Institute reached his desk, he had set in motion the necessary instruments for its actualization including a meeting of all key officials of the University’s College of Health Sciences and the University Teaching Hospital (IUTH) which is hold immediately after the interactive session with the team from Patient Safety Africa.
The Vice-Chancellor assured Dr. Asekhame of the University’s total commitment to the actualisation of the Patient Safety Institute to be established at Okada for training of medical personnel from all over Africa on Patients safety. He also promised adequate support towards actualising the laudable goal.
Consequently, the meeting dissolved into a strategic session with the officials of the College of Health Sciences of the University, the Teaching Hospital Management team and the Patient safety Africa team. The meeting held in the office of the Provost of the College of Health Sciences under the Chairmanship of the Provost, Professor Jacob Unuigbe.
After preliminary introduction, Dr. Asekhame made a power-point presentation to drive home the low decimal of Patient Safety in Medicare delivery in Africa compared to other countries of the world.
The meeting ended with the development of a strategic plan with timeline for implementation which is to be reported to the Vice-Chancellor by the Provost.
