INTRODUCTORY PREFACE OF ECONOMICS AND DEVELOPMENTSTUDIESDEPARTMENT
The Department of Economics and Development Studies created in 1999 at the inception of Igbinedion University, Okada, is research driven and offers four years programmes leading to the award of Bachelor of Science degree in Economics and Development Studies. The graduates are equipped with academic excellence and entrepreneurial skills to lead; appropriate ICT skills for digital age; practical training on statistical and econometric software packages for improved career prospects. At post graduate level, the department offers Postgraduate Diploma in Economics, Master of Science in Economics and Doctor of Philosophy in Economics. Candidates seeking admission into undergraduate programme must possess at least five credit passes at not more than two sittings in SSCE or GCE or NECO or their equivalents in the following subjects: English Language, Mathematics, Economics and any other two subjects. The candidate must also sit for current JAMB examination and obtain the prescribed cut-off mark in the relevant subjects. The candidate must pass the screening exercise conducted for all applicants by Igbinedion University. In line with international standards, the philosophy of the Department of Economics and Development Studies is to train and graduate students imbued with a sound theoretical and practical foundation. The students will be expected, not only to make specific contributions to the field of Economics & Development Studies and achieve their professional goals, but to make a difference in Nigerian, African and the world economies. The degree programme will equip the students for the wide range of opportunities in economics, finance, management as well as government in the contribution to development of Nigeria, Africa and the global community in the field of Social Sciences in general and in the various sub-fields of Economics and Development in particular.
