On Tuesday, September 2, 2025, Igbinedion University marked the 91st birthday of its founder and Chancellor, His Excellency Sir Chief Dr. Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion, CFR, Esama of Benin Kingdom, with a special Senate session filled with heartfelt tributes and celebration.
In a goodwill message delivered by the Vice-Chancellor Professor Lawrence Ikechukwu Ezemonye, the university community, including the Senate, staff, students, and alumni, honoured Sir Igbinedion’s extraordinary legacy. Describing him as a visionary leader and philanthropist, Professor Ezemonye highlighted the Chancellor’s pivotal role in establishing Nigeria’s first private university, a bold step that transformed educational opportunities for thousands of young Nigerians.
“When private university education was still a novel idea, Sir Igbinedion saw a national imperative,” Professor Ezemonye stated. “His resolute vision and faith in Nigeria’s future birthed this institution, now a beacon of hope and excellence.”
The Vice-Chancellor emphasized that Igbinedion University’s state-of-the-art facilities and vibrant campus stand as testaments to Sir Igbinedion’s dream. More significantly, the university’s graduates—doctors, lawyers, engineers, entrepreneurs, and leaders worldwide—represent the true impact of his foresight. “They are the greatest dividends of his investment and the most valuable gifts to our nation,” he added.
The Senate, as the university’s highest academic body, reaffirmed its commitment to upholding Sir Igbinedion’s legacy of excellence, integrity, and leadership in education. The celebration concluded with gift presentation and prayers for the Chancellor’s continued health, peace, and joy.
