Igbinedion University Celebrates ESAMA’s 90th Birthday

2024 founders day

Igbinedion University Okada recently honoured its esteemed founder and Honourable Chancellor, Sir Chief Dr. Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion CFR, the Esama of Benin Kingdom, in a grand celebration of his 90th birthday. The event took place at the University Central Library Conference Hall and featured a captivating lecture titled “Synoptic Narrative of a Legendary Entrepreneur at 90,” delivered by distinguished guest speaker Dr. Charles Uwensuyi-Edosomwan, SAN.

During the celebration, Vice Chancellor Prof. Lawrence Ezemonye, PhD, FAS, extolled Chief Igbinedion for his unwavering commitment to education, research, entrepreneurship, community service, and philanthropy. “His dedication has inspired countless individuals to strive for excellence and work towards the betterment of our community and the world,” he remarked, emphasising the profound impact of Igbinedion’s leadership, particularly over the past 25 years as the university celebrates its own milestone anniversary.

Prof. Ezemonye expressed deep gratitude for the Chancellor’s steadfast support and guidance, stating, “On this special day, we not only honour the achievements of our Chancellor but also reflect on the legacy he has built—a legacy that will continue to inspire generations to come.” He highlighted the dual significance of the occasion, noting that the birthday lecture coincided with the university’s 25 years of phenomenal existence, marking a remarkable period of growth and influence in the academic landscape. “Today’s lecture is not just a celebration of years but a commemoration of leadership, vision, and dedication that has shaped our institution,” he added.

In his address, Dr. Charles Uwensuyi-Edosomwan described the Esama as a remarkable figure of boundless courage. He remarked, “The Esama’s trailblazing life journey does not shy away from daunting paths. He is unafraid of difficulties and does not yield when they stand in the way of his objectives.” Uwensuyi-Edosomwan further praised Chief Igbinedion’s bravery, stating, “For bravery and fearlessness, the Esama is overdosed where ordinary men would want to tread cautiously. To recount the story of the Esama, one must recognise that he grew to become one of the mightiest trees in the forest that once sprouted as a small shoot.”

In his goodwill message, Chief Gabriel Igbinedion emphasised that the occasion was not merely a personal milestone but a testament to the collective efforts and achievements of the entire university community. Represented by his son, the Deputy Chancellor of Igbinedion University and two-term executive Governor of Edo State, His Excellency Chief Dr. Lucky Igbinedion, he reflected on the establishment of the university in 1999. He shared that it was born out of a heartfelt desire to provide future generations of Nigerians with high-quality education delivered with an uninterrupted academic calendar.

Chief Igbinedion stated, “This also aligns with the need at the time to accelerate the production of high-level manpower required to galvanise the socio-political and economic development of our dear country. Since inception, the university has continued to achieve remarkable success in teaching and research, capacity building, and innovation. The university has produced high-quality graduates across various fields who are contributing significantly to national and global development.”

As the event concluded, attendees were reminded of their shared commitment to the values instilled by Chief Igbinedion, which continue to guide Igbinedion University towards academic excellence and societal progress.
