Igbinedion University Inducts New Doctors

Igbinedion University, Okada, celebrated a milestone on Monday as it held its 20th Oath-Taking and Induction Ceremony for newly qualified medical doctors. The event, marked by reflection, gratitude, and forward-looking charge, brought together academic leaders, medical professionals, and proud families to welcome 29 new physicians into the fold.

In his opening address, delivered on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Lawrence Ikechukwu Ezemonye, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ralph Adeghe, expressed profound joy and thanked the institution’s founder, Sir Chief (Dr.) Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion, for his unwavering commitment and investment in the university’s medical programme since its inception in 1999.

“The success story of Igbinedion University cannot be written without the eloquent representation of our medical programme,” Professor Adeghe stated. He praised the dedication of the University Governing Council, the College of Health Sciences, and its academic staff for sustaining accreditation and enriching the curriculum under the leadership of Provost Prof. Dominic Osaghae.

The ceremony’s theme, “A Doctor and a Fulfilling Life,” resonated deeply through the proceedings. Professor Adeghe emphasized that while doctors have the unique privilege of transforming lives, achieving personal fulfillment requires intentional balance.

“The demanding nature of medicine can lead to burnout,” he cautioned. “Setting boundaries, pursuing hobbies, and finding joy in small moments are essential.”

Echoing this sentiment was the keynote speaker, Dr. Eustace Oseghale, Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association, Edo State Branch. He urged the inductees to define fulfillment early and pursue passion over mere financial gain.

“He who stands for nothing falls for everything,” Dr. Oseghale reminded the graduates. He outlined the hallmarks of a good doctor: empathy, communication, collaboration, ethical practice, and advocacy. He also stressed the importance of self-care, mentorship, and investing in personal growth.

“It is all about you,” Dr. Oseghale affirmed. “Look after your health, save, invest in your passions, and surround yourself with positive influences.”

A high point of the event was the formal presentation of licenses and certificates to the inductees by Prof. John Ohaju-Obodo, who represented the Registrar of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), Prof. Fatima Kyari. The moment symbolised their official entry into the medical profession and the council’s endorsement of their qualification and readiness to practice.

As the inductees took the Hippocratic Oath, they were reminded of the weight of their new responsibility—not only as medical practitioners but as nation-builders tasked with advancing Nigeria’s health sector.
