The opening ceremony for the Entrepreneurial Studies (EPS 311) course for the 2024/2025 academic session at Nigeria’s Premier Private University, Igbinedion University Okada (IUO), took place recently, marking a significant step in the institution’s commitment to fostering entrepreneurship among its students.
The highlight of the event was a compelling lecture titled “Unleashing Your Passion: Turning Ideas Into Business,” delivered by Engr. Egbuna Iloba, the Director of the South South Zonal Office at the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN). His insights inspired students to harness their passions and transform them into viable business ventures.
The program was organised by the Sir David Osunde Centre for Entrepreneurship and Skills Acquisition at IUO. In his address, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Lawrence Ikechukwu Ezemonye, represented by Deputy Vice Chancellor Prof. Ralph Adeghe, emphasised the university’s dedication to engaging all 300-level students from various colleges in entrepreneurial studies. Prof. Adeghe highlighted that this course serves as the practical and final phase of their training in entrepreneurship, following a foundational course taken at their 200 level.
Dr. Mary Josiah, the Director of the Centre for Entrepreneurship and Skills Acquisition, welcomed attendees and reiterated the centre’s mission to encourage students to develop entrepreneurial skills alongside their academic studies. She expressed optimism about the potential impacts of this initiative on students’ career paths.
The event also featured a goodwill message from Mrs. Anita Eribo, a representative of the Managing Director of Edo State Skills Development Agency, who commended IUO’s efforts in promoting entrepreneurship among students.
A significant moment in the ceremony was the inauguration of the IUO Skills Entrepreneurship Club, conducted by Mr. Moses Egbabor, the Manager of SMEDAN in Edo State. This club aims to provide students with a platform to collaborate, innovate, and enhance their entrepreneurial skills.
Students expressed their appreciation for the university management’s initiative, noting that the exposure to practical aspects of entrepreneurship is invaluable. This program is poised to not only provide education but also ensure holistic development, equipping students to be innovative in today’s dynamic business environment.
As Igbinedion University Okada continues to pave the way for entrepreneurial education, the launch of this program signifies a commitment to preparing students for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in the world of business.
