In a remarkable display of talent and innovation, Igbinedion University (IUO) has emerged victorious in the National Universities Commission (NUC) National Enterprise Challenge 2024, themed “Making the Good Life Possible Through Entrepreneurship.” The competition, which took place virtually in October 2024, featured presentations from various universities across the South-South region of Nigeria.
Adetoyin Oluwadamilola Dorcas, a 400-level student from the Prof. Dora Akunyili College of Pharmacy, clinched the first position with her presentation on “Clean Eco Essence: Sustainable Perfumery and Cleaning Agents Programme.” Dorcas expressed her deep passion for sustainability, emphasizing its role in fostering long-term economic and environmental health. She stated, “Sustainability involves making decisions that ensure we meet our present needs without compromising the ability of future generations.”
Following closely, Olanegan Olamide Anthony, also a 400-level student from the Medical Laboratory Science department, secured the second position with his innovative project, the “ Igbinedion Mobile Application”. This comprehensive app aims to facilitate seamless access to essential services for the IUO community. Olanegan highlighted the app’s focus on five core features: Attendance Management, Online Checking of Semester Results, Online Hostel Application, Transcript Request and Tracking, and a Self-Service Wallet for campus and external services. He noted that by integrating these services, the app intends to enhance the student experience, improve administrative efficiency, and foster a more connected campus community.
Both students participated in the competition under the auspices of the Dr. David Osunde Centre for Entrepreneurship and Skills Acquisition. This Center is dedicated to bridging the gap between institutional learning and skill acquisition, providing students with the necessary tools to thrive in contemporary industrial space. The Centre has developed entrepreneurial and skills acquisition modules, along with a series of annual workshops designed to expose students to the industrial life-cycle and reduce their dependency on specific industry sectors. Currently, the Centre is equipped to train students across 13 Schools.
The success of these students not only reflects their hard work and creativity but also underscores the commitment of Igbinedion University to fostering entrepreneurship and innovation among its students.
