In a riveting showdown at Igbinedion University Okada, Deputy Chancellor and former Edo State Governor, Chief Lucky Igbinedion, set the stage with a ceremonial kick-off for the much-anticipated finals of the inter-university invitational football tournament. The hosts, Igbinedion University Okada, faced off against the Federal University of Technology, Akure, in a match filled with suspense and excitement.

The first half was a battle of missed opportunities, with both teams vying for the lead. However, it was IUO who broke the deadlock in the second half, much to the delight of the roaring crowd. Despite the FUTA Tigers struggling to breach IUO’s solid defence, they managed to secure an equaliser late in the game, forcing a tense penalty shootout.

As the ninety minutes ended with a one-all draw, the game entered a high-stakes penalty phase. IUO faltered with a missed spot kick, while the FUTA Tigers capitalised on all their chances, clinching victory and the championship title. Chief Lucky Igbinedion graciously awarded medals to the officials, the runners-up, and the jubilant champions.

Amidst the excitement, players and coaches from various competing teams, including the University of Benin, Achievers University, Owo, and Fountain University, Oshogbo, shared their reflections, highlighting the camaraderie and sportsmanship that characterised this prestigious tournament.
