Okada, Edo State – The Department of International Relations and Strategic Studies at Igbinedion University, Okada recently embarked on an enlightening excursion trip to several diplomatic missions in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital city. The 23 students who participated in the trip gained invaluable exposure to the workings of international relations and the cultural ties between Nigeria and other countries.
The first stop on the itinerary was the China Cultural Centre in Abuja, where the students were warmly welcomed by the deputy director, who also serves as the deputy ambassador of China to Nigeria. The students were treated to a captivating presentation on the harmonious relationship between China and Nigeria, as well as an insightful tour of the center’s facilities. They were exposed to the rudiments of the Chinese language and had the opportunity to immerse themselves in the rich cultural heritage of China, including a calligraphy exhibition and Spring Festival decorations.
Professor Madu Magnus, the leader of the delegation from Igbinedion University, expressed his delight at the transformative experience the students had at the China Cultural Centre, stating that “experiencing the Spring Festival decorations and participating in the calligraphy game have been transformative for our students. It is through such immersive experiences that they gain a deeper understanding of cultural expressions and their impact on international relations.”
The next visit was to the Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), where the students were educated on the responsibilities of the commission and strategies for wealth creation in Nigeria. The commission emphasized the importance of diversifying the economy beyond oil and mineral resources, and highlighted the significance of entrepreneurship, increased manufacturing capacity, and export trade in enhancing Nigeria’s economic power on the global stage.
On the second day of the excursion, the students visited the Indian High Commission in Abuja, where they were warmly received by the Counsellor and the Deputy Indian High Commissioner to Nigeria. The deputy high commissioner delivered a comprehensive lecture on the multifaceted India-Nigeria relations, covering areas such as trade, investment, education, health, and capacity building. The students were also treated to a refreshment mini-party with Indian delicacies, and each participant received a package from the commission.
The final stop on the excursion was the South African High Commission, where the students were welcomed by the High Commissioner, Mr. Thamsanqa Dennis Mseleku, and other staff members. The High Commissioner addressed the issue of visa application challenges and the sensitive topic of xenophobia, providing valuable insights into the dynamics of Nigeria-South Africa relations. The Minister Plenipotentiary (Deputy High Commissioner), Mrs. Lindi Mminele, also highlighted the role of the Nigeria-South Africa Chamber of Commerce in fostering economic cooperation between the two countries.
Throughout the excursion, the students were able to engage in meaningful discussions and gain a deeper understanding of the workings of diplomacy and international relations. The Vice Chancellor’s goodwill messages were delivered to the respective missions, and the high commissioners expressed their willingness to explore further collaborations and exchange programs with Igbinedion University.
The successful completion of this excursion trip is a testament to the commitment of Igbinedion University to providing its students with hands-on experiences that complement their academic studies. The valuable insights gained by the students during this trip will undoubtedly enhance their understanding of international relations and prepare them for future endeavours in the field.
