Professor Friday Okonofua MD, PhD is a professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and a Fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, the West African College of Surgeons, the Nigerian Academy of Science, and the African Academy of Science. He has served as the Executive Director of the International Federation of Gynaecology and Obstetrics and as Honorary Adviser on Health to President Olusegun Obasanjo of Nigeria.
Professor Okonofua is a gobal champion in women’s health, a discipline where he has published more than 319 journal articles, 3 books, 26 book chapters, 22 monographs, and obtained 48 international research grants. His most recent edited book “Contemporary Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Developing Countries” published by Springers Nature in August 2021 comprises 69 chapters, and is one of the most comprehensive textbooks ever published in the discipline in the African region.
He is the founder of the Women’s Health and Action Research Centre, one of Ngeria’s leading NGO’s, and the founding editor of the African Journal of Reproductive Health Innovation, and the Coordinator of the World Bank projects at the University of Benin in Nigeria. He recently completed his term as the pioneer Vice-Chancellor of the first University of Medical Sciences in Ondo State in Nigeria, and now he is the Director of Grants and Research at both the Women’s Health and Action Research Centre (WHARC), and the University of Benin, in Nigeria.
