Department of Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry, Oba EnitanAdeyeyeOgunwusiOjaja II, College of Natural and Applied Sciences, Igbinedion University Okada, was one of thefoundation departments established in 1999 on approval and establishment of the Universityin 1999. The B.Sc. degree programme was also introduced in the year 2000.

The department run full B.Sc. degree programme in Chemistry and teaches chemistry courses to students in Colleges of Natural & Applied Sciences, Health Sciences, Pharmacy, andEngineering at first year. It also services the chemistry course requirements of BiologicalSciences and Biochemistry Departments at higher levels.

The Department is blessed with competent, versatile and experienced staff with specialties in Chemistry and equips the students with both theoretical and practical knowledge to strengthen their skills and profession. The Chemistry laboratory is well equipped with modern equipment and also affiliated with the Central Laboratory. Our main library is equipped with latest version of Chemistry Textbooks.

The objectives of the Chemistry programmeareto stimulate in the students sustained and enthusiasm in chemistryand its applications, build in students a culture of continuing enquiry, provide students with a broad and balanced base of chemicalknowledge and practical skills, develop in students a range of skills applied in chemical and non-chemical areas, that can provide confidence for employment, provide students with a solid base of chemical knowledge andskills that are required for postgraduate studies and research, and inculcate in students an appreciation of chemistry in all humanendeavors.

There are a lot of gainful employment job opportunities for students after completion of Chemistry programme. Students on completion of the programme can have a gainful employment in any of the following industries: Food Processing, Brewery and Distillery, Polymer and Rubber Technology, Petroleum and Petrochemicals Oil prospective companies,Mineral Processing, Cosmetic and Detergent, Dyes and Textile, Pharmaceutical, Paper and Wood and Paint. The programme is also designed to equip students for self-employment. Today, many of our graduates are doing well all over the globe.
