In a pioneering move to address sustainability challenges in tertiary education, Igbinedion University Okada recently hosted its 6th Annual Retreat at the prestigious Kada Plaza in Benin City, Nigeria. The event convened esteemed figures, including Council members, Provosts, Deans, and Directors, to deliberate on strategies for sustaining educational excellence amidst evolving paradigms.
Under the theme “Managing the Demands of Sustainability in Tertiary Institutions: The Private Sector Intervention,” the retreat delved deep into the environmental, economic, and social factors impacting the university landscape.
The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Lawrence Ikechukwu Ezemonye, Ph.D, FAS, highlighted the university’s commitment to forming strategic partnerships with industries, fostering global education experiences, and integrating industry professionals into academic curricula. Prof. Ezemonye emphasized the importance of industry involvement in delivering Master Classes and supervising postgraduate research, ensuring students are well-equipped for a dynamic world.
Acknowledging the visionary leadership of the Founder and Chancellor, His Excellency, Sir Chief Dr. Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion, the Vice-Chancellor underscored the institution’s dedication to excellence, innovation, and societal impact.
Pro-Chancellor Prof. Sheikh Ahmed Abdullah emphasized the necessity of interdisciplinary approaches and the recognition of environmental, economic, and societal elements in sustainability efforts, advocating for mastery and continuity in these areas.
The Hon. Chancellor, represented by Deputy-Chancellor Chief Dr. Lucky Nosakhare Igbinedion, championed the retreat as a platform for enhancing council members’ capacities, fostering collaboration, and skill-building. He stressed the vital role of the private sector in supporting academic institutions to address sustainability challenges effectively.
Distinguished panelists, including Professor O. A Afolabi, Professor A. O. Ilesanmi, Lady Celerina Ojomo, Professor A. S. Sambo, and Engr. Greg Ogbeifun, highlighted the significance of strategic partnerships, continuous training in healthcare, diversity promotion, energy efficiency, and bridging the gap between academic and artisan professionals.
The retreat culminated in recommendations to bolster funding in healthcare and education, prioritize professional development with a focus on diversity and inclusion, and implement sustainable strategies for long-term growth and excellence in private universities.
